Performers on the Go

Plan early to enter the 2025 NPR Tiny Desk Competition & also enter our contest to win a free Tiny Desk video to submit.

The NPR Tiny Desk Contest for 2025 is a unique opportunity for undiscovered musicians to gain significant exposure. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the contest, and NPR has expanded the prize and opportunities for participants. The winner of the contest will get to perform their own Tiny Desk concert at NPR's headquarters, go on a 10-city national tour, and be featured on NPR's "All Things Considered."

Additionally, the winner will receive mentorship from industry professionals to help advance their music career.

For the first time, there's also a fan favorite vote this year. Contest judges will select their favorite entries to be showcased in the Tiny Desk Contest Top Shelf series on YouTube, where artists and fans can vote for their favorites.

WE ARE OFFERING A PRIZE FOR ONE SELECTED SONG TO SHOOT A VIDEO FOR THE TINY DESK CONTEST. SUBMIT YOUR SONG (SPOTIFY OR VIDEO LINK) TO PERFORMERSONTHEGO@GMAIL.COM BY NOVEMBER 5, 2024.

It is important to plan properly and create a quality submission video that stands out. We have organized a media production team, including Performers on the Go and Aza Pietropaolo to make that happen. It is good to get the video submitted early so you can get some early views/comments.

The submission video requirements follow:

These are the eligibility requirements for a Tiny Desk Contest Video:

  • Must be 18

  • Must be a US resident

  • Must be unsigned

  • Must sing an original song with no sampling

  • Video must be made specifically for the contest

To enter the contest, participants need to record a video of themselves performing one original song behind a desk, upload the video to YouTube, and then submit it on the Tiny Desk Contest website. The submission window for this year closes on February 21, but it's an annual event, so those interested can prepare for next year.

In 2024, NPR's Tiny Desk Contest received over 6,600 submissions from artists hoping to showcase their original music and perform at the iconic Tiny Desk concert series (YouTube). This large number of entries highlights the contest's popularity and the wide interest it generates among emerging musicians each year.

The winner of the 2024 NPR Tiny Desk Contest is The Philharmonik, a multi-talented artist from Sacramento, California. His winning entry, titled "What's It All Mean?", impressed the judges with its depth and musicality. Check out the Tiny desk winner 2024 video submission.

Here are some recommendations for musicians entering the NPR Tiny Desk Contest:

Originality in Music: Focus on showcasing your unique style and sound. Originality catches the attention of judges and can set you apart from other contestants.

Engaging Performance: Even though the setting is minimal, your performance should be engaging. Use your expressions, vocal variations, and instrument mastery to make a compelling presentation.

High-Quality Video and Audio: Ensure that your video and audio quality are as good as possible within your means. Clear sound and a well-framed video can make a significant difference in how your performance is perceived, and having proper lighting is super important.

Personal Introduction: Start your video with a brief introduction of yourself and your song. This personal touch can make your entry memorable and helps establish a connection with the audience and judges.

Keep It Intimate: The essence of the Tiny Desk concerts is their intimate feel. Try to convey a sense of closeness and personal connection through your performance.

Creativity with Your 'Desk': The contest rules require performing behind a desk, but you can get creative. Some past entrants have used unconventional desks (like ironing boards or makeshift setups) to stand out.

Practice and Prepare: Thoroughly rehearse your performance to ensure you are confident and can manage any nervousness. A smooth, practiced performance will likely resonate better with viewers.

Check the Contest Rules: Always double-check the latest contest rules and guidelines to ensure your entry meets all criteria and deadlines.

Watch Previous Winners: Study past winners to understand what types of performances succeed. Note how they manage their arrangements, presence, and song choices.

Feedback Before Submitting: If possible, get feedback on your performance from friends, family, or other musicians before submitting your video. This feedback can provide valuable insights that may improve your entry.
